Southern right whales wintering in the Auckland Islands

چکیده

Historically, southern right whales were widely distributed in New Zealand waters. This population, was driven to commercial extinction following extensive exploitation during the early 19th century (Dawbin 1986). It was further depleted by illegal Soviet hunting in 1950-1970 (Tormosov et al. 1998). While right whale sightings around mainland New Zealand remain rare, up to 165 whales can be found at the Auckland Is in a single day during winter. Despite what appears to be adequate habitat along the eastern coastline, the whales' distribution is largely limited to Port Ross, Laurie Harbour and waters around Enderby I. The relatively small area where so many whales congregate means that at peak season the density of whales at the Auckland Is is very high (approximately 8 whales/km 2). The residency period extends from at least early May to at least the end of September, with peak numbers in July and August. Cow/calf pairs utilise most areas within Port Ross and Laurie Harbour, and show a preference for shallow waters. The photographic catalogue contains 410 animals (including 76 cows) and capture-recapture analysis suggests that the size of the population is likely to be between 740 and 1140 animals. The low level of gene flow between this population and the southwestern Australia population and other wintering grounds underlines the uniqueness of the Auckland Is population. The Auckland Is are currently the primary calving and breeding ground for southern right whales in New Zealand waters. Long-term monitoring programmes should be directed at the continued annual collection of photographs for individual identification, investigating the location of the feeding grounds and developing a sighting and photo-identification network for southern right whales around mainland New Zealand.

First Direct Evidence for Natal Wintering Ground Fidelity and Estimate of Juvenile Survival in the New Zealand Southern Right Whale Eubalaena australis

Juvenile survival and recruitment can be more sensitive to environmental, ecological and anthropogenic factors than adult survival, influencing population-level processes like recruitment and growth rate in long-lived, iteroparous species such as southern right whales. Conventionally, Southern right whales are individually identified using callosity patterns, which do not stabilise until 6-12 m...

Corrigendum: Cultural traditions across a migratory network shape the genetic structure of southern right whales around Australia and New Zealand

“Small samples of skin were collected from southern right whales across New Zealand and Australia using a stainless-steel biopsy dart fired from a modified veterinary capture rifle31 or deployed from a crossbow32. Samples were collected from Bremer Bay/Doubtful Island Bay, Western Australia in 1994 and 1995 as previously described23, and Cape Jervis/Encounter Bay, South Australia, Warrnambool a...

Identification of humpback whale Megaptera novaeangliae wintering habitat in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands using spatial habitat modeling

During the winter months, humpback whales Megaptera novaeangliae prefer warm and shallow regions, and these habitat preferences have been linked to reproductive status and success. Central North Pacific humpback whales winter in the main Hawaiian Islands (MHI), with peak densities occurring in late March. The Hawaiian Archipelago extends over 1800 km to the northwest of the MHI and includes a n...

Humpback whale Megaptera novaeangliae song reveals wintering activity in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands

The main Hawaiian Islands (MHI) are the principal breeding ground for humpback whales in the North Pacific. Over the past 3 decades, population recovery from whaling-era losses has resulted in a steady increase in the number of whales wintering in Hawaiian waters and a geographic expansion of their distribution in the MHI. Until recently, no existing evidence showed that this expansion included...

Southern Hemisphere humpback whales wintering off Central America: insights from water temperature into the longest mammalian migration.

We report on a wintering area off the Pacific coast of Central America for humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) migrating from feeding areas off Antarctica. We document seven individuals, including a mother/calf pair, that made this migration (approx. 8300km), the longest movement undertaken by any mammal. Whales were observed as far north as 11 degrees N off Costa Rica, in an area also use...
